Janet Hartke Metzger, was born August 19, 1940 in Chicago and was the only child of Helen K. and Robert Hartke. She passed away at Evanston Hospital on September 12, 2022. Janet’s loving family includes her husband of 60 years George “Storm” Metzger; her daughter Joan Metzger (Peter) Hoholik; her son James R. (Sandra) Metzger; her grandchildren Emma, John “Jack”, and Charles “Charlie” Hoholik, Thomas (Gwendolyn) and Matthew Metzger; her sister-in-law Marion “Marny” (Robert) Padgett; her nephew Scott (Leslie) Padgett and niece Sandra (Mark) Friedsam.
Both Jan and Storm were 1958 graduates of New Trier High School. Jan received a BA in Education from Northwestern University and was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. Jan and Storm were married shortly after graduating from their respective colleges on June 23rd, 1962. They spent three years in Sacramento, California while Storm served in the Air Force. Completing the service obligation they moved to Northbrook, Illinois where they raised their children.
Jan was such a generous and kind woman, always taking time to connect to others while being present for her family. She cherished her involvements with the Village Presbyterian Church, the Hookers Stitching Group and P.E.O. Sisterhood. She was President of the Northbrook Woman’s Club and President of Northbrook Community Nursery School and a member of the Junior League of Chicago.
Jan’s many interests included travel, bridge, needlepoint, and reading. She cherished over 20 years of memories at their vacation home on Palm Island on the west coast of Florida and her childhood summer vacations spent fishing with her mother, father, and grandfather in Wisconsin. Jan was known for her warmth, joyful disposition, and amazing memory – she never forgot a name, face, or birthday. Her friends and family will dearly miss Jan, the always lovely lady and her beautiful smile.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 30, at 11:00 a.m. at The Village Church of Northbrook, 1300 Shermer Road, Northbrook with a live stream of the service available at https://villagechurchnorthbrook.org/sermons/.
