Kenneth Michael Thelander
Born: August 17, 1966
Died: April 7, 2022
Kenneth Michael Thelander of Crystal Lake, IL, passed away on April 7, 2022 surrounded by his loving family after a courageous year-long battle with pancreatic cancer.
Ken–or Kenny to his closest family and oldest friends–was born on August 17, 1966 in Elgin, IL to Jeanine Marie (Lowe) Thelander and Kenneth Charles Thelander and grew up in Cary, IL. He was a multi-sport athlete at Cary Grove High School and his happiest young memories included being coached in youth baseball by his dad and enjoying summer trips to the family cottage on Fish Lake in Wisconsin.
Ken graduated from CGHS in 1984 and received a Bachelor’s Degree from Northern Illinois University in 1988. He held engineering design positions in Illinois, California and Texas and spent the past 23 years in Process Engineering and Program Management with Dell Technologies, Inc.
Ken married Noël Jeanne Diehl on May 8, 1993 and they raised their daughters in Austin, Texas and Crystal Lake, Illinois. He was a devoted, beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend who brought sincerity and kindness into his interactions with others. He will be remembered as a true source of compassion, humor and light.
He was also a disciplined triathlete who inspired us with such power and perseverance when training for the numerous races, marathons and Ironman events he completed over a 20 year span. He inspired us yet again by pushing through his cancer fight to remain positive, treasure time and experiences with loved ones and be here with us for as long as possible.
Ken is survived by his wife, Noël Thelander and his pride and joy–daughters Cassidy Jeanne Thelander and Lauren Michelle Thelander; his mother Jeanine Thelander, brothers Michael (Michelle) Thelander, Matthew (Lori) Thelander; mother-in-law Janice (Bruce) Wilson, brothers-in-law Christian Diehl, Stephen Diehl Jr. and Ryan (Akiko) Wilson; nephews Taylor Thelander, Dustin Thelander, Trevor Thelander, Bryce (Alyssa) Thelander, Joshua Thelander and Braden Thelander, nieces Erika Wilson and Marie Wilson; aunt Elizabeth Runchey, uncle Robert Lowe and numerous cousins, second cousins and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth C. Thelander, grandparents Robert and Lorraine (Synek) Lowe, grandparents Harold and Lucinda (Ortman) Thelander, aunt Kathleen Ehlenburg, father-in-law Stephen B. Diehl Sr. and precious nephew Cody Scott Thelander.
A celebration of life will take place on Monday, April 18th at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 300 Pathway Ct., Crystal Lake IL with visitation from 4-7 and memorial service at 7:00 p.m. In honor of Ken’s positivity, we invite you to wear cheerful colors for him on that day.
