Lillian Young Colwell, 98, of Rockford, Illinois, passed away on Saturday, September 3, 2022. The daughter of Clyde H. and Laura Jewell Brown Young, she was born on April 7, 1924, on the Drake farm in Marion County, Missouri. She married Robert W. Colwell on June 22, 1947, in Hannibal, Missouri, at the Fifth Street Baptist Church. Surviving are her daughter, Kathryn Colwell, of Loves Park, Illinois; her son, William Colwell (wife, MaryJo MacSwain), of Madison, Wisconsin; her grandson, Eric Colwell, of Beijing, China; her cousin, Mary Lu Bates; and nieces and nephews: Jean Vaux, Kevin Miller, Mark Miller, and Nancy Rudolph. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert Colwell, sister Doris Marie Miller, and nephews Philip and Thomas Colwell.
Lillian graduated from Roodhouse High School in 1941. After attending Hannibal LaGrange College for two years, she taught at elementary schools in Murrayville and Roodhouse, Illinois. Along with her husband Bob, she owned and managed Gambles hardware and furniture stores in Roodhouse and Mt. Sterling, Illinois, before retiring in 1984. Her hobbies included gardening, reading, traveling, spending time with friends and family, and volunteering with various organizations. She was a natural leader, beloved by many.
Lillian was a member of Wesley Chapel Church. She was active in P.E.O. for sixty years, holding multiple leadership positions. Since 1988, she was a member of the Reverend James Caldwell Chapter of D.A.R., for which she served as a Regent.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 10th, at the Williamson Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service. A graveside service will follow at 12:30pm at Akers Chapel Cemetery in Hull, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the Reverend James Caldwell Chapter NSDAR, Wesley Chapel Church, or Akers Chapel Cemetery in Hull. Condolences may be left online at www.airsmanhires.com.
