Margaret Dankovich passed away peacefully at her home in Midland, MI on September 18th, 2022. She was 96 years old. Margaret truly was part of the “Greatest Generation” and lived a full and impactful life to those around her.
Margaret was born in Dobsina, Slovakia on March 26th, 1926 to Martin and Susan (Gall) Bendik. She immigrated to the United States in December of 1934 where the family was reunited with Martin on Christmas Day, whom they had not seen in five years. She was raised in Warren, MI and graduated from Warren High School. Shortly after, she met and married John Dankovich in 1947. They raised their three children in Birmingham, MI where they resided for 32 years.
After her children were grown, she went to work for Brother Rice High School in Birmingham where she assisted as a librarian. After their retirement in 1983, John and Margaret moved to their “House on the Pond” in Evart, MI where they loved entertaining and hosting friends and family. She lived by the Pond for 31 years where it was remembered fondly by her Grandchildren as a place to create, grow, work, relax and love. Margaret was a wonderful hostess and no place was this shown more than in the many ethnic foods and dishes she shared.
Margaret loved her Lord and Savior and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Evart where she was active in many church activities. She also belonged to the Evart General Federation of Women’s Club. In 2014, Margaret moved to Independence Village in Midland where she resided until her death. Her positive and friendly attitude was contagious and she made many friends at the Village and enjoyed playing cards, Bible Study and still visiting with her friends and family. Margaret also enjoyed music, reading, quilting, gardening and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. As an interesting side note, nobody in the family can ever recall her wearing denim or jeans. Ever.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 60 years, John, in 2007, her sister Susan and brother Walter.
She is survived by her son, James Dankovich of Beverly Hills, MI, son Jay Dankovich of Leland,
MI, daughter Diane Johnson of Holland, MI. Grandchildren Erick & Kim Johnson of Midland,
Aaron & Anna Johnson of Grand Rapids, Meg Johnson of Chicago, IL, Chris Dankovich of
Lapeer and Annalise Dankovich of Troy. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren: Orrin, Evelyn & Grace Johnson of Midland and Willemina & Ellie Johnson of Grand Rapids. Also surviving are her sisters Helen Powell and Mary Dankovich along with many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 21st, 2022 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Midland, MI with Pastor Danielle Shealy officiating. There will be a luncheon immediately following the service. Visitation will be from 10 AM to 11 AM prior to the service. Burial will take place on September 21st, 2022 at White Chapel Cemetery in Troy, MI at 3PM with Pastor Nik Schillack performing words of committal.
In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider your local Hospice Foundation or St. Paul Lutheran Church of Evart, MI.
The family wishes to thank Brittney and the team at Corso Hospice as well as Kim and the staff at Laurus Home Care for their loving care for our mother and grandmother in her final days. If you wish to honor Margaret in a special way, please take time to sit down and share a meal (no matter how simple or extravagant) with friends and family. Margaret firmly believed that the world’s problems seemed much smaller after spending time with your loved ones.
