Marilyn Riggs Schmauss, 92, of Rockford IL, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 18, 2022, at River Crossing. Born September 9, 1929, in Terre Haute, IN, the daughter of Frank and Margaret (Craft) Parker. Graduate of Scottland High School, Scottland, IL, Class of 1947 and from Lakeview Hospital School of Nursing, Danville, IL, as a registered nurse in 1950. She worked at Alma Nelson Manor, SwedishAmerican Hospital and other nursing homes and hospitals in the area until retiring in 1986. Marilyn was proud of being a nurse. She also served many years as a volunteer with SwedishAmerican and St. Anthony Hospital. Marilyn married Leon Riggs in Garland, IL in 1951 and they had three daughters. She later married George L. Schmauss in Rockford, on September 6, 1980. He predeceased her on October 11, 1992. Marilyn was a member of Court Street United Methodist Church. She was a very loving mother and grandmother who had a lot of spunk! Marilyn was so proud of her family that at every family gathering she would smile and say, “I started this whole mess.”
Marilyn is survived by her daughters, Jan Almquist, Diann (Tom) Pillmore, Barb (Brad) Nelson of Rockford; step-daughters, Geni Krolick, Mary and Anne Schmauss of New Mexico; grandchildren, Brendan (Nancy) Dougherty, Justin (Ashley) Dougherty, Collin (Yazmine Flores) Dougherty, Ben (Tonya) Morton, Brad (MariAnn) Morton, Kelly (Brian) Hintzsche, Katie Nolan and Sean Schmauss; twelve great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Also predeceased by her parents; twin sister, Marian Alongi; sister, Eleanor Shreve; and brothers, Howard and Forest Parker. The family would like to thank the staff at River Crossing and Northern Illinois Hospice for their loving care.
Funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at Fred C. Olson Chapels, 1001 Second Ave, Rockford, IL. Visitation will be from 11:00 to 11:45 a.m. prior to the service.
